Safaricom Sacco existed from the year 2000. Around 2008, the membership of Safaricom Sacco decided under the Ministry of Co-operatives to separate the arm of investment from the Credit & Saving just for prudence sake and to make sure that the two activities – investing in immovable assets and running a business type of environment, does not the affect the typical credit and savings business.
Over the ten years, the co-operative has been able to remit up to 42% annual returns to its investors. Their total investment over a period of ten years amounts to Kshs. 20 billion.
Safaricom Investment Co-operative (S.I.C.) was set up in 2009 as an investment arm of the Safaricom Savings & Credit Co-operative Society, under the Co-operatives Act Cap 490 to pursue joint investments for its members and has been in real estate space since its inception. Safaricom Investment Co-operative (S.I.C.) started with about 100 member, after 5 years the membership had grown up to over 1800 members , with most of the members at this time being Safaricom staff. Due to the high demand from the general public, a decision was made to open it up to general public membership. 1,800 members mostly Safaricom staff now grew up to over 5,000 members by the beginning of 2021.
Membership is categorised into individuals, groups and companies. For an individual you required to pay a non-refundable fee of Kshs.10,000 and also buy a minimum of Kshs. 500 Shares (Kshs. 26,500), so you basically need Kshs.36,500 to be a member.
As an investment cooperative, SIC pursue various investment opportunities for the benefit of its members and drawing its membership from the current and former staff of Safaricom Ltd and the public at large.
Today, we have a pleasant engagement whereby the Sacco offers loans to it’s members to buy projects from Safaricom Investment Co-operative (S.I.C.) and the loans are of different types depending on what each engaging member is interested in.
